What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also know as periodontal disease or gingivitis, refers to an overgrowth of bacteria within the mouth. Left untreated, progressive stages of the disease impact the health of the gums, causing inflammation, bleeding, and eventually, recession. As the gums pull back from the crown of the tooth, the condition may worsen. Early diagnosis and treatment can preserve the health of your teeth and gums.
Available Periodontal Treatment Options
During an initial consultation, Dr. Sutor can identify whether you are in need of periodontal treatment, and review available treatment options with you. Our practice focuses on a conservative approach to care, and periodontal disease can now be treated with a laser. Dr. Sutor uses this unique laser to provide you an alternative to invasive gum surgery. It is a less painful, less traumatic way to treat periodontal disease at any stage.
If non-surgical treatments like aggressive dental cleanings, laser treatment, or scaling and root planing have not eradicated your gum disease, Dr. Sutor may recommend surgery. One of the most successful treatments our practice utilizes is soft tissue grafts. During a soft tissue graft, tissue may be taken from the roof of the patient's mouth, or from a donor tissue bank. Once the graft has been placed, it is secured with a small number of stitches. This procedure reinforces thin, weak gums, and fills out areas that have receded.
Consistent with our implementation of cutting-edge techniques in the industry, Dr. Sutor is excited to also offer Gintuit™, the only FDA-approved product available to generate new gum tissue. Using stem cell technology, Gintuit™ uses the patients' own tissue to prevent worsening of gum recession, while thickening existing gum tissue and enhancing its health.
Benefits of Seeking Treatment
Addressing gum disease in its earliest stages not only improves and maintains oral health, but guards against eventual loosening and loss of teeth. Additionally, gum disease has been linked to a growing number of health conditions, like heart disease. One of the easiest healthy lifestyle commitments you can make is to practice good oral hygiene, and promptly seek treatment if you are experiencing any symptoms of gum disease.
